105 MC- Actice audience

 Individual work- Gisele

For this weeks assignment, we had to take something from our cabinet of curiosity and answer these questions:

  • The negative effect it has on the society and a volunurable audience
  • How it influences a volnrable audience.

For my idea, i decided to do a music video. My reason for choosing this idea was because nowadays music videos are very contraversal, many people tend to listen to it and from listening to it, they get influenced in soo many different ways.

Music videos

What is a music video?

A music video is a short film or video that accompanies a complete piece of music/song. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings.

How can it influence the mind of an audience

Nowadays, music videos influence people in soo many different ways, especially the younger generation. For young children, this effect can be extremely damaging. Young children often have trouble distinguishing between reality and fantasy, right and wrong. They do not have enough personal experience to compare what they see on TV with real life.

Negative effect

music videos and the lyrics that go along with the music of this century are greatly influencing  youths  in negative ways. It is portraying the use of alcohol and drugs as both normal and acceptable, and also glorifying it. It is showing young women wearing provocative clothing, and promoting pre-marital sex. It is also teaching the youth of gangs, weapons, and violent behaviors such as murder and suicide as everyday activities. It is teaching the youth to grow up and face a reality that they are not responsible for knowing.

Positive effect

The right song can put anybody in a better mood and soothe emotional turmoil. We all go through our phases, and most people will turn to certain songs to improve their moods. The main reason behind this phenomenon is that music has the ability to verbalize and express our feelings better than any other medium. Additionally, we have favorite songs for particular situations because we tune into the melodies that capture our vibe the best.

To enhance the relationship between your emotional state and music, try creating associations among songs and moods. This way, when you feel a certain way, you will know exactly which song or CD to listen to in order to give you the lift or the calm you need in any given moment.

In conclusion, i will say music video can be good and also bad at the same time. it can help us in so many different ways wheres as also teach us bad things at the same time.

Media Diaries

The idea of keeping a diary is nothing new. It has been around for thousands of years and has provided a powerful insight into peoples daily lives for up and coming generations. It has helped us understand what people used their spare time for, what they had for lunch, how much exercise they did and so on. As it was an un-mediated and un-compulsory form text, any one could compile one and there were no rules or guide lines for them. It is a truly creative insight into someones mind.

But what would someone in a few hundred or thousand years time think of ours if we were to complete one now? Most people would probably write a lot less nowadays than what they did even a few decades ago. ‘Why is this?’ you might be thinking. Well, it could be down to any number of things. As we live in a much more media orientated world today, we are soaking so much more information up than we have ever done. We are being influenced so much by advertising and a lot more of our time is being bought. This could be through many different means such as gaming, television, cinema and any other form of media. The big companies know this and they exploit that weakness that we all have. Another reason why we might not be writing so much down these days could simply be that people have become more lazy than a few generations ago. There is such an overwhelming amount of information that we can get hold of these days that our lives become saturated with it. We don’t really know what we are looking for, there for we will never really find it.

It may sound like I have gone a little bit off track there, but it all adds up to something. From this we were asked to see just how much media we really do soak up. Is it really as much as we thought it would be? Or is it a whole lot less than we have been told it is? And by the term ‘media’, we meant many different forms. It could be the afore mentioned forms, but this also includes radio, newspapers, the internet, music, books, DVD’s and so on. There is simply an overwhelming amount of forms that could be included in this list that it would almost be impossible to type them all.

After compiling my diary, it was clear to me that my whole life has been infected with media. I knew before doing this that it would be a lot, but after writing it all down on a piece of paper, I was astounded by simply how much of my day to day life is taken up by taking in these different elements. A considerable amount of it would be through using the internet. This is pretty much the first and last thing that I do with my day, just after I have woken up up, right up until before I go to bed. It is almost worrying how much time I spend on the computer.

Below is a list of our groups media diaries. Even though we all come from different backgrounds and upbringings, they should probably all be very similar.

Cabinet of curiosity

It was the name of the collections of those who were quite place of storage in the Renaissance periods, but also exposure to all sorts of objects expressed themselves a certain taste for undiscovered and heteroclit. Could be seen there medal, antiques, animals, clams, insects, shells and even work of art. It is said that have played an essential role in the development of the sciences, particulary through the dissemination of illustrated catalogues, which allowed scientists to know news located away from them. Some more Frenchmen were traces of superstition and eras. Blood samples were exposed by the dragon skeletons of animals, imaginary mythological times such as unicorn. The oldest cabinet of curiosities seems to be that of his Ole Worm (1588-1654), whose book was published with great success in 1655. Sir Hans Sloane made out of the Cabinet of curiosity or germ of a famous institutions, British Museum. The content was organised in several distinct groups, whose Latin name pretty much tells us not to call upon more detailed explanation: “artificialia”, “naturalia”,”exotic”, “scientifica”. Cabinets of curiosity were replaced by official institutions, primarily by the museums, but also of the traditional collections, still important in areeas such as entomologia( which deals with insects) and the mystique of science conchiliologia, shellfish and shells.

Our group find the cabinet of curiosity very interesting because it`s a traditional way to comunicate the direct feelings. We can keep our opinios and taste in art and still be original. We think that having a private space in which we can develop our hobby it`s beautiful. The best way to comunicate is by writing and the globalization of the free speach is amazing. We can still collect our favourite things in a cabinet and share them with curious people. We can watch televison and listen to music on Youtube and sense the difference between the truth and lie. The similarities of our cabinet of curiosity are the links on Youtube, the music, Facebook. Facebook is a media object that powers the lust to comunicate. It is on the far the most active form of comunication. It is colloquially, useful and easy to use. Besides the other forms of comunication, it doesn`t keep acount of age or taste, it`s approaching people. We organize our thoughts by writing messages concise and publish any materials that we give in the cat out of our personality. The only downside that makes us sad it`s that, like any other form of comunication, it`s cold and distant. We risc all the time the understandind of the message, but in other news it`s great. We definitely recommend it and we think that we have every time the curiosity to access the site.

Seminar

For this weeks seminar, our main topic was based on the assignment we recieved last week. We talked about what each group did, and a couple of the groups had some good ideas on what they did, for eaxample  one group did something about Who hates Justin Bieber. Looking at this, i think lots of people might have had something to say as he is a new, young and talented artist. We also looked at the assignment given to us today and discused what we had to do and how we had to do it which was very helpful as some of us were unclear on what they needed to do. we also talked about what we were going to do next week, which is related to todays assignment on something from our cabinet of curiosity, so hopefully by next week we will have more to addd on what happened and what everyone came up with.

2/11/2010

Today we met up again to discuss what we needed to do. Because we didn’t understand last weeks assignment and couldn’t find it on the blog, we had to catch up and as it turned out, there was actually work on the blog for us to do. The work was for us to do research on a particular topic we found intresting by using the general public. For this, we decided to to work on junk food. The question was weather junk food should be banned. We created a facebook page just for this and got so many response which was very helpful to us in knowing what the public thought. We later on analysed the result and came up with a conclusion on what should be done about junk food and found out the majority of people that ate it.

For this weeeks assignment, we have to individually pick one item from our cabinet of curiosity and write about the ways our media object can ingfluence the mind of a volnurable audience. After this, we have to then compare it with each member of our group to see what specific  themes and topic emerged the most. We then have to produce our thoughts on the theory and come up with a summary of a debate for next weeks seminar. We have not done that yet, but hope to work on it by the end of this week and hopefully ready for next weeks seminar.

Today we all met up to discuss the development of the blog. As we haven’t met up as a whole group yet, this was a good chance to get to know what we needed to add to it and when. Because we haven’t added anything to it as of yet, we have split up all of the previous tasks and allocated them to individual people to complete within the next few days. This should hopefully get the ball rolling and start it off as a more regular activity.

DO YOU THINK JUNK FOOD SHOULD BE BANNED?

For this work we had to use facebook to find out peoples opinion. We created a group called Junk food should be banned to see the amount of people that were going to join, or leave a comment of their opinion.

We were really impressed to see that there were lot’s of different opinions on this topic, some good and some bad, but the majority of people supported the idea that junk food should be banned, although they all had an individual reason why this should be done. Nowadays, scientists have been trying to do different research on why people easily get fat and most the reason was because of junk food.

Research

Kid, female, eating a burger, junk food, obesity: Junk food creates changes in brain chemicals that encourage overeating, research has found.

findings suggest that when you eat something high in fat, your brain gets ‘hit’ with the fatty acids, and you become resistant to insulin and leptin. Since you are not being told by the brain to stop eating, you overeat.” The hormone leptin is produced in the brain and suppresses hunger while insulin is produced by the pancreas and regulates blood sugar levels.Although the study was performed on rats and mice the scientists said their results reinforced common dietary recommendations to limit saturated fat intake as “it causes you to eat more.”The animals received the same amount of calories in one of three forms of fat palmitic acid, monounsaturated fatty acid or unsaturated oleic acid which is found in olive and grapeseed oils. The biggest affect on leptin and insulin was caused by molecules from palmitic acid which is found in beef, butter, cheese and milk.

Dr Clegg, whose findings are published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation, said: “The action was very specific to palmitic acid, which is very high in foods that are rich in saturated fat.She said it may explain why many people who overindulge on a Friday or Saturday say they are hungrier than normal on Monday. The findings may also have implications for diabetes research because although scientists have known a high-fat diet can cause insulin resistance, little has been known about the mechanism behind it or whether specific types of fat are more dangerous.Dr Clegg said “We found the palmitic acid specifically reduced the ability of leptin and insulin to activate their intracellular signalling cascades. The oleic fat did not do this.”She said the other key finding is this mechanism is triggered in the brain – long before there might be signs of obesity anywhere else in the body.Dr Clegg said the next step is to determine how long it takes to reverse completely the effects of short-term exposure to high-fat food.

Findings from public

  Like Junk food
Male 40%
Female 60%

From this research, it shows that women consume more junk food than men, which means soo much because it gives us a clear understanding that a lot of women rather prefere going to the shop to buy ready meal rather than spending a long period of time cooking and as for men, nowadays, most men try to cactually cook in the kitchen which is very impressive as before very few men even knew how to cook.

how often do you eat junk food
Age 12 to 16 1
Age 16 to 20 3
Age 20 to 25 2
Age 25+ 1

Also looking at this research, it shows that older people dont really bother about junk food, they eat it less as compare to teenagers age 16 to 20, this is very typycal of people at this age as they are still young and always want to try new things. Also looking at kids the age of 12 to 16 it also shows thta they dont eat junk food that much which is good. The reason for them not eating junk food could easily be the fact that they havnt really got much control as they are stil under supervision from their parents and they have to eat what is given to them.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Junk food should not be abused the way it has  these day. People should try and eat more healthy in order to main a healthy lifestyle. Junk foodshould not  be aboused, it can be eaten but not everyday as it can become a very unhealthy lifestyle.
